Bio
Kelsea Armstrong (she/they) is a professional jazz vocalist and working-class artist based in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. She has years of experience performing jazz at prestigious local venues like Blue Note Hawaii, The Atherton Performing Arts Studio at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, and the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum’s Capitol Modern.

Kelsea Armstrong is a cardholder of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) Local 677, Musician’s Association of Hawaiʻi.

She is known from her work as the premier vocalist for Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning Honolulu Jazz Quartet, playing with her own live bands at self-produced events around Honolulu’s Chinatown, toasting sessions at the city’s underground rub-a-dub parties, and from her solo gigs in acoustic settings at local bars and galleries.

Her new presence on the digital scene has developed with recent studio collaborations including Royce Fisherman’s fish out of water EP and Nick Kurosawa + Ohtoro’s Univibes. Her growing devotion for music culture manifests through the sharing of her vinyl collection though occasional DJ sets in town, and her Internet radio project - Breeze Block Radio.

On the horizon

Armstrong is wrapping up two recording projects set to release later this year.

The first project is a full-length studio album that marks her third collaboration with Zenbu records and Ohtoro titled Swag Lamp.

This record brings a variety of styles together with Ohtoro’s signature sounds and Armstrong’s melodies/lyrics. It is music specifically crafted for vinyl (and smoking to). It is designed to play where harsh lighting is replaced with ambient glow. The chill, lifestyle beats hardly surpass 120 bpm making is an excellent listen for those who are looking to slow it down for 10 tracks’ worth of time.

Next, you can anticipate the release of Reggasm; a punky reggae collaboration by Kelsea Armstrong and Jah Gumby of Father Psalms Studio. The classic militant reggae riddims with jazzy changes delivered by Jah Gumby are decorated by soulful vocals and songwriting by Kelsea Armstrong. Their lyricism dips into darkness, then brings relief with comedic flair. Reggasm is not only a reflection of their unwavering passion and study of reggae music history, but it’s also a fresh take that pulls elements from other styles in a way that is both unique to the genre and to Hawaiʻi.
